"Why," you ask? Because we want profile pages to have freedom of customization, but also to have some consistency. This way, when anyone visits a deviant, they know they can always find the art in the top left, and personal info in the top right.

The point of deviantART is to showcase your OWN art, not other people's. Putting art that you find online in your own gallery is like claiming that you did it yourself, (even if you give credit to the original source) which is sort of art theft, even if you weren't meaning to.
To keep from getting in trouble, and as respect to the artists, you should keep your gallery limited to art that you actually made all on your own.
